Hôtel Paul

No idea why the poor reviews from others - we found it great for the price. Sure, the room itself (family size) was what one might expect for only a 2-star hotel: decor a bit dated, no coffee maker, etc. But the room and hotel as a whole were clean, and very conveniently located within walking distance to all the interesting parts of town. The breakfast served outside was fantastic and very good value. The hosts were polite and very helpful, suggesting excursions as well as driving directions for our onward journey. They even reached out a couple of days beforehand by SMS to check everything was OK. Parking was convenient with a multi-level deck on the corner of the block about 50m away from the front door. Overall excellent value!

I don't usually book a two-star hotel but I was attracted by the photo of the garden, which I assumed was tiny. It's not. I also assumed I'd be a difficult distance outside the old city. I wasn't. AND I got to stay inside my budget! Breakfast is served in the garden -- a basket of bread and croissant, butter and jam and a madeleine and a yogurt and a pot of coffee. You can sit and read in the garden or in the sitting room between the reception area and the garden. I splurged on a double room, although I was travelling alone, and I recommend you do that, if you can afford it, because you get a larger room. The gentlemen who manned the desk and served breakfast were lovely, efficient and helpful. All in all a much better experience than my stay in the town's "boutique" 4-star. Hotel Paul is best two-star I've ever seen!

Usually I do not review locations, but in this case I want to keep potential guests from wasting money. The lobby was cute and the adjacent garden an inner-city gem. The owner was pleasant and explained all the locations worth seeing in Aix-en-Pr. I then went up to the room to find a very stained carpet, also dirt, hair and rubbish in the drawers of bathroom and a toilet that wasnt properly cleaned. Sheets had a range of stains - grease, what looked like blood as well as red wine and orange dots on the sheets and towels. I asked the owner to show us a different room- sheets and day blanket just as filthy, including a live bug crawling out from under the pillow. That room also had a rundown bathroom from the 80s, a window to the internal ventilation courtyard with pigeon poop and a foldable metal bed as our double bed. Also no AC. He attempted to argue with us that stained sheets are still clean, smelling the pillow in front of us and then offering to change the sheets for us again. We kindly declined and asked for a refund. He continued arguing and refused a refund of the room. PS. The fotos are not exhaustive and only show a few stains of the sheets in the first room.
